As I have been contemplating, writing, and living through the transition of this season. I have been particularly inspired by the wind. It has been more windy this month in nyc than is usual for the spring. Big, unrelenting gusts. In the Taoist Alchemical practices, wind is attributed to the seasonal shifts of spring and fall.
Wind helps circulate, shake up, and revitalize what was once still. It awakens us from our winter slumber. Wind also agitates, it relates to the emotion of anger and forces us to face the inevitability of change even when we aren’t ready…the winds of change, they say.
My partner and I did a little gardening around the spring equinox last week. To be more accurate I should say we did some “dirt tending”. I’ve been feeling excited to plant herbs and flowers, but every time I look out to our planters I am faced with dead thyme and petrified peppers. I keep forgetting that we first need to clear the dead and compost last season’s bounty before we can grow new life. On a bright sunny day, with the door open and the cat sprawled halfway between the balcony and the living room, we decided to journey out and started clearing out the wintered plants and turning over the soil…dirt tending.
We also had some new house plants to repot and water so we left them out to soak and bask in the warm spring air. I watched the fresh green leaves start to dance as the wind (once again) kicked up. I remember reading once how houseplants liked to be gently shaken to mimic being caressed by the wind. It helps them stay resilient and rooted.
And so, as we navigate the wild winds of the astrology of the month ahead, may whatever challenges come our way aid us in staying resilient and rooted as we grow.
